In north-central GA, north of Atlanta; organized Dec 3, 1832 from Cherokee County. Name Origin: For George Rockingham Gilmer (1790-1859), U.S. representative from GA (1821-23; 1827-29; 1833-35) and twice governor (1829-31; 1837-39).

Area (sq mi): 431.83 (land 426.69; water 5.14). Pop per sq mi: 64.10.
