Gilpin, William (1813–94) territorial governor; born in Brandywine, Pa. He accompanied John C. Frémont's expedition (1843) and engaged in Indian fighting in the Rocky Mountains (1847–48). He wrote The Central Gold Region (1860) and as Colorado's first territorial governor (1861–62) he helped save Colorado for the Union.
