In central CO, west of Denver; original county; organized Nov 1, 1861 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For Col. William Gilpin (1822-94), first territorial governor of CO (1861-62).

Pop 2005: 4,932. State rank: 50. Pop change: 2000-20005 3.70%; 1990-2000 55.00%. Pop 2000: 4,757 (White 92.00%; Black or African American 0.50%; Hispanic or Latino 4.20%; Asian 0.70%; Other 4.40%). Foreign born: 3.40%. Median age: 38.30.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation and Scotchgard Protector, a product of Minnesota-based adhesives company 3M, have named the Central City Opera House in Gilpin County one of five national, historical treasures to receive professional cleaning and treatment with Scotchgard products to preserve and protect the buildings.
Past gold production from Gilpin County between 1858 and 1958, as reported by the US Department of the Interior (US Geological Survey Professional Paper 610 dated 1968), was 4.
