Ginsburg, Sofia Mikhailovna 

Born Mar. 20 (Apr. 1), 1863, in the village of Pavlovka, in present-day Dnepropetrovsk Oblast; died Jan. 7 (19), 1891. Russian revolutionary. Narodnik (Populist).

Ginsburg joined the revolutionary movement in 1884. She met P. L. Lavrov, whose ideas exerted a strong influence on her, in Paris in 1885. In the fall of 1888 she returned to Russia to resurrect the People’s Will and to organize an attempt on the life of Alexander III. She was arrested in 1889. In 1890 she was sentenced to death; the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. She was incarcerated in Shlissel’burg Fortress, where she committed suicide.
