Gintsburg, Aleksandr Il’ich 

Born Feb. 16 (Mar. 1), 1907, in Rogachev, in present-day Gomel’ Oblast. Soviet cameraman and director. Honored Art Worker of the Byelorussian SSR (1955); Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1969).

Gintsburg graduated from the Leningrad Phototechnicum in 1927 and the Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute in 1934. In 1925 he began working as a cameraman for the film company Sovkino (now the Lenfil’m Studio). After that, he worked for various film studios; in 1943 he joined the Gorky Moscow Studio of Films for Children and Young People. He was cameraman on the films The Counterplan (1932, with Zh. Martov), Peasants (1935), Komsomol’sk (1938), Member of the Government (1940), Valerii Chkalov (1941), Two Soldiers (1943), Private Aleksandr Matrosov (1948), Konstantin Zaslonov (1949), and They Have a Homeland (1950). He directed the films One Night (1962, with E. A. Faik) and Engineer Garin’s Hyperboloid (1965; based on A. N. Tolstoy, screenplay by Gintsburg). He was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and medals.
