Gironde Estuary

Gironde Estuary

Estuary on the Bay of Biscay, southwestern France. Formed by the confluence of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, it extends for about 45 mi (72 km) inland. It is navigable for oceangoing vessels, although it has sandbanks and strong tides.

Recently I met Jean-Marie and Chantal Mado of Chateau Morillon in the Premier Cotes de Blaye, north of the Gironde Estuary.
Despite the motley crew I encountered on the Gironde estuary, Bordeaux is an intelligent city.
From Fontenay, we travelled to the port city of Royan, two hours away, from where we hoped to take the short 20 minute ferry across the Gironde estuary onto the Medoc, thus avoiding the heavy traffic around Bordeaux.
