glass electrode [¦glas i′lek‚trōd] (physical chemistry) An electrode or half cell in which potential measurements are made through a glass membrane, which acts as a cation-exchange membrane; thus, the potential arises from phase-boundary and diffusion potentials which, depending on the composition of the glass, are logarithmic functions of the activity of the cations such as H+, Na+, or K+of the solutions in which the electrode is immersed. These sensors should have a flat glass electrode and flat surface porous Teflon reference. After piercing the neuron with a microscopic glass electrode, they stimulated the cell with pulses of current and recorded its behavior. The new glass electrode technology we are offering, for example, has already been proven to last twice as long in harsh environments as conventional electrodes," said Ken Brown, vice president and general manager of Foxboro Measurements and Instruments. |
