Size: 1,254,429 acres.
Established: Administered under cooperative agreements between Bureau of Reclamation and U.S. Department of the Interior, April 18, 1958, and September 17, 1965. Established as a national recreation area on October 27, 1972.
Location: In southeastern Utah and northern Arizona, encompassing the area surrounding Lake Powell, which stretches for 186 miles along the old Colorado River channel behind Glen Canyon Dam. Lees Ferry and the Navajo Bridge Interpretive Center are located on AZ 89A. Carl Hayden Visitor Center in Page, AZ is on AZ 89. The Bullfrog Visitor Center is located on UT 276. Halls Crossing is also reached by UT 276. Hite is located just off UT 95.
Facilities: Campgrounds, picnic area, rest rooms (é), lodging, groceries, restaurant/snacks, boat rental, boat ramp, visitor centers (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail.
Activities: Camping, hiking, mountain biking, swimming, kayaking, boating, fishing, scuba diving, water-skiing, hunting, auto touring, ranger programs, guided tours.
Special Features: This park lies in the midst of the most rugged canyon country on the Colorado Plateau. Lake Powell's 1,960 miles of shoreline provide a variety of water-based recreational opportunities.

Lake Powell is a great place for houseboating situated in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
After the tour I sat on a bench at the entrance, scratching my bug bites and thinking about the late first lady, Lady Bird Johnson, who helped start the Wildflower Center at the University of Texas in Austin, and my friend Bill Wolverton, a resource management ranger at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area who undertook a one-man quest to eradicate non-native plants in the canyons of UtahAAEs Escalante RiverAutwo warriors in a battle I never understood before visiting the Garden in the Woods.
