Glushkov, Ivan Nikolaevich 

Born Mar. 11 (23), 1873, in Usol’e, present-day Perm’ Oblast; died Jan. 3 (16), 1916, in Tallinn. Russian scientist; specialist in drilling and oil-well technology.

After graduating from the Perm’ Realschule, Glushkov worked in Ural mining enterprises. From 1897 he worked in the Baku petroleum industries. His basic work, A Guide to Well Drilling, in which all drilling techniques are explored thoroughly and in depth, was published during 1904-11. Beginning in 1909, Glushkov worked at the St. Petersburg Mining Institute. He wrote The Exploitation of Drilled Wells (1913), which was for many years the sole handbook on this topic.
