Born Aug. 2, 1788, in Göttingen; died Apr. 13, 1853, in Heidelberg. German chemist. From 1814 to 1851 a professor at the University of Heidelberg.

Gmelin’s Manual of Theoretical Chemistry (vols. 1-2, 1817-19; 4th ed., vols. 1-6, 1843-55) contains all the experimental data on inorganic and organic chemistry known at that time. After Gmelin’s death the part of his manual on inorganic chemistry was updated several times. The last (eighth) edition, begun in 1924, is the most complete of all existing handbooks on inorganic chemistry.
