Working closely with inmates, Merrima's design was based on the organic form of a goanna, a lizard-like creature sacred to the local Wiradjuri people. The reptile population ranges from a variety of venomous and harmless snakes to the endangered blue-tongued lizard and the goanna, a monitor lizard that grows to 8 feet. In plan, the walls form an abstract representation of a kurrumanthu or goanna (a type of large indigenous lizard) chosen by local Aboriginal people as a symbol of the project. |
