Gobbi, Tito

Born Oct. 24, 1913, in Bassano del Grappa. Italian baritone singer.

Gobbi won first prize at the International Vocalists’ Competition in Vienna in 1936. In Rome he appeared for the first time on the opera stage in 1938, after which he sang in other Italian cities. Since 1942 he has been a soloist at La Scala in Milan, and since 1947 he has toured many countries in the world. One of the outstanding and most popular of contemporary singers, Gobbi is known for his high level of vocal craftsmanship, melodiousness, and artistic versatility. Particularly dear to him are these roles in G. Verdi’s operas: Rigoletto, Germont, Amonasro, lago, Falstaff, Simon Boccanegra, and Renato (from Rigoletto, La Traviata, Aida, Otello, Falstaff, Simon Boccanegra, and Un Bailo in Maschera). Gobbi has appeared in many musical films.
