Gofman, Ernst Karlovich
Born Jan. 3, 1801; died May 23. 1871, in Tartu. Russian explorer and geologist. From 1823 to 1826. Gofman took part in O. Kotzebu’s voyage around the world. Gofman lectured at the universities of Dorpat (1833–36), Kiev (1837–42), and St. Petersburg (1845–63). In 1847 he headed the Russian Geographical Society’s expedition to the Northern Urals, which also carried out investigations in 1848 and 1850. The expedition discovered the Pai-Khoi Range and gathered data on geology, flora, fauna, and ethnology. From 1853 to 1859, Gofman studied the geology of the Central Urals.
