Gogland, Battle of (1788)
a sea battle on July 6 (17) in the region of Gogland Island (Gulf of Finland), during the Russo-Swedish war of 1788-90. On June 20 (a day before the beginning of the war), the Swedish Fleet (15 battleships and eight frigates) under the command of the Duke of Södermanland entered the Gulf of Finland, intending to annihilate the Russian fleet with a surprise attack. The Baltic Fleet (17 battleships and eight frigates) under the command of Admiral S. K. Greig, came out from Kronstadt to meet the enemy and entered into battle, during which each side lost one battleship. On the morning of July 7 the Swedish fleet departed to Sveaborg, where it was soon blockaded by the Russian fleet. REFERENCEGolovachev, V. F.
