Golden Horn: see Istanbul Istanbul , city (1990 pop. 6,748,435), capital of Istanbul prov., NW Turkey, on both sides of the Bosporus at its entrance into the Sea of Marmara. Its name was officially changed from Constantinople to Istanbul in 1930; before A.D. 330 it was known as Byzantium.

an inlet of the Bosporus in NW Turkey, forming the harbour of Istanbul

Golden Horn 

(Turkish name, Halic), a bay by the European shores of the southern entrance to the Bosporus Straits. Length, 12.2 km; width, 91–122 km; depth, 47 m. The city and port of Istanbul is situated on both shores of the bay. [9–-1690–1]
