Golenishchev-Kutuzov, Ivan Loginovich 

Born Sept. 1 (12), 1729; died Apr. 12 (24), 1802, in St. Petersburg. Russian naval figure and writer, admiral (1782).

Golenishchev-Kutuzov was educated in the Land Cadet Corps and Naval Cadet Corps. In 1764 he became the quartermaster-general of the navy and main director of the Naval Cadet Corps, which he headed until his death. In 1797 he became vice-president and, in 1798, president of the Admiralty Collegium.

Golenishchev-Kutuzov made an important contribution to the organization of naval education in Russia, introducing new disciplines and detailed programs into the Naval Corps and creating a library and an observatory. He translated the first work in Europe on naval tactics, by P. Gost. He published a list of all the Russian naval ranks since the time of Peter I. Golenishchev-Kutuzov translated Voltaire and published works of poetry and prose in Russian periodicals.
