Golenkin, Mikhail Il’ich
Born Feb. 4 (16), 1864. in St. Petersburg; died June 15, 1941. in Moscow. Soviet botanist. A student of I. N. Gorozhankin, Golenkin graduated from Moscow University in 1887. From 1891 to 1905 he was a docent and from 1905 to 1930 a professor at Moscow University. His principal works were on the morphology of several groups of Anthophyta and on the experimental morphology of the Hepaticae. In his work Victors in the Struggle for Existence (1927) he analyzed the reasons for the domination of land by angiosperms in the Cretaceous period (their adaptability to brighter light and drier environments).
