Goloded, Nikolai Matveevich 

Born May 9 (21). 1894; died 1937. Soviet statesman and party figure. Became a member of the CPSU in 1918. Born in the village of Staryi Krivets, in present-day Briansk Oblast, into the family of a Byelorussian peasant who was a stove repairer. Graduated from the workers’ department of the Goretskii Agricultural Institute.

In 1917, Goloded did revolutionary work among the soldiers’ committees of the Southwestern Front. From 1918 to 1921 he worked in the soviets of Novozybkovskii District. From 1921 to 1924 he was president of the executive committee of the Gorky City Soviet (Gomel’ Province) and was president of a three-man commission to deal with banditry. In 1924 he became a member of the Byelorussian bureau of the Central Committee of the RCP (Bolshevik). From 1925 to 1927 he was secretary of the Central Committee of the CP (Bolshevik) of Byelorussia. In 1927 he became president of the Council of People’s Commissars of the Byelorussian SSR. He was a delegate to the 14th through 17th congresses of the ACP (Bolshevik) and at the 16th and 17th congresses was elected a candidate member of the Central Committee of the party. He was awarded the Order of Lenin.
