Golovnia, Anatolii Dmitrievich

Born Jan. 20 (Feb. 1), 1900, in Simferopol’. Soviet cameraman. Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1935) and doctor of the arts (1966). Member of the CPSU since 1944.

Golovnia graduated from the State Technicum of Cinematography in 1926. He made his debut in 1925 with the film Chess Fever. In this and later works he collaborated with the founders of the Soviet school of motion-picture photography—the director V. I. Pudovkin. In 1934, Golovnia began teaching at the Ail-Union State Institute of Cinematography, becoming a professor in 1939. His work is close to the traditions of Russian realistic painting, taking into account the specific requirements of motion pictures. He boldly makes use of the dynamic potentials of the camera, solves problems of expressive lighting, and creates expressive portraits by interplaying various shades of light. He shot the films Mother (after Gorky. 1926), The Descendant of Genghis Khan (1929), Minin and Pozharskii (1939), Suvorov (1941. with T. G. Lobova), and Admiral Nakhimov (1947), among others. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1947 and 1951 and has been awarded the Order of Lenin, three other orders, and various medals.
