Gómez de Avellaneda, Gertrudis 

Born Mar. 23. 1814. in Puerto Príncipe. Cuba; died Feb. 1, 1873, in Madrid. Spanish and Cuban writer.

Gómez de Avellaneda began to publish in 1836 while living in Spain. In 1840 her first dramatic production, Leoncia, was performed. In 1841 she published a collection, Poems, and an antislavery novel. Sab. She was the author of the tragedies Munio Alfonso (1844) and Baltasar (1858), a historical novel about the conquest of Mexico Guatimozín (1846), and other works. After her return to Cuba in 1859 she published the journal Album Cubano. In 1864 she returned to Spain.
