Gondar

Gondar or Gonder (both: gŏn`dər), town (1994 pop. 112,249), capital of Amhara region, NW Ethiopia, at an altitude of c.7,300 ft (2,225 m). It is a regional trade center and a tourist destination. Once Ethiopia's largest city and a center of religion and art, Gondar served as the capital of Ethiopia from c.1635 to 1867. In the 19th cent. the city declined, and in 1887 it was sacked by Sudanese Mahdists (see Mahdi Mahdi [Arab.,=he who is divinely guided], in Sunni Islam, the restorer of the faith. He will appear at the end of time to restore justice on earth and establish universal Islam. The Mahdi will be preceded by al-Dajjal, a Muslim antichrist, who will be slain by Jesus.

a city in northern Ethiopia; administrative center of Bagemder Province. Population, 31,000 (1968).

Gondar is the commercial center of an agricultural region and produces grains, oils, cattle, honey, hides, and leather handicrafts. It is the site of a medical college. Gondar was founded in the 17th century and was the capital of Ethiopia until the 19th century. A 17th-century castle is preserved in Gondar.

Score Ethiopia is a superb way to use football to deliver muchneeded basic facilities to the Gonder region such as football kits, while also providing for children here.
