In east-central TX, east of San Antonio; original county; organized Mar 17, 1836 (prior to statehood) from Old Mexican Municipality. Name Origin: For Col. Rafael Gonzales (1789-1857), provisional governor of Coahuila and TX (1824-26).

Area (sq mi): 1069.82 (land 1067.75; water 2.07). Pop per sq mi: 18.30.
Pop 2005: 19,587. State rank: 121. Pop change: 2000-20005 5.10%; 1990-2000 8.30%. Pop 2000: 18,628 (White 51.20%; Black or African American 8.40%; Hispanic or Latino 39.60%; Asian 0.30%; Other 19.10%). Foreign born: 11.00%. Median age: 36.30.
Income 2000: per capita $14,269; median household $28,368; Pop below poverty level: 18.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,573-$25,014.
