Google Apps

A collection of Google applications and utilities that is offered as a package either free or paid. In 2007, Google combined its e-mail, instant messaging, calendar, word processing, spreadsheet and Web authoring applications along with administration utilities into Standard and Premier Editions, which are free and paid respectively. The Premier Edition guarantees 99.9% uptime for e-mail and offers a single sign-on for applications as well as technical assistance that includes phone support.

A Web-Based Office Suite
By offering a paid suite of primary business applications with tech support, Google has thrown its hat squarely into the office software arena. The significant difference is that Google Apps is Web based, whereas suites such as Microsoft Office and WordPerfect Office are installed locally on users' machines. See Web 2.0, Google, Microsoft Office, WordPerfect Office, Lotus SmartSuite, StarOffice and OpenOffice.org.
