Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur (gō`rəkpr'), city (1991 pop. 505,566), Uttar Pradesh state, N central India, on the Rapti River. Founded c.1400, it is an agricultural market and industrial center, with textile factories, sugar mills, and railway workshops. There is an airport in Gorakhpur. The city was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1934, but has since been rebuilt.

Gorakhpur 

a city in India, in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Population, 234,500 (1969). It is a railway junction and contains large locomotive workshops, sugar refineries, and a jute factory. The chemical industry is being developed (the production of mineral fertilizers, acids). Gorakhpur is a center of weaving handicrafts. It has a university, founded in 1957.
