Goral
(Naemorhedus goral), an even-toed ungulate mammal of the subfamily Caprinae. The goral resembles the goat. Body length, approximately 110 cm; tail length, 15 cm; height at the shoulders, up to 75 cm. Both males and females have horns up to 15–20 cm long; the base is covered with ringlike growths. The hair is grayish or reddish brown. The goral is found in the Himalayas, Eastern Tibet, northeast China, Korea, and the Ussuri Krai (the southern part of the Sikhote-Alin’ Mountains). It is a typical mountain animal. It lives in small herds among slopes and precipices overgrown with various shrub and tree vegetation, predominantly of the broad-leaved type. The mating period is in September. In late May and early June the females give birth to one, or less frequently, two kids. The goral’s way of life is little studied. It is hunted for its meat. In the USSR hunting the goral is prohibited because of its small numbers. REFERENCEMlekopitaiushchie Sovetskogo Soiuza, vol. 1. Edited by V. G. Geptner and N. P. Naumov.
