Gorbach, Alfons 

Born Sept. 2, 1898, in Imst, Tirol. Austrian statesman.

Gorbach graduated in 1922 from the University of Graz; he is a lawyer by education. From 1933 to 1938 he was the leader of the Fatherland Front (a coalition of the forces of the right and center) in the province of Styria. He was a deputy of the Landtag in 1933–38. After the seizure of Austria by fascist Germany, he was imprisoned in concentration camps in 1938–43 and 1944–45. After the liberation of Austria (1945) he was one of the leaders of the Austrian People’s Party. Since 1945 he has been a deputy in parliament. From 1960 to 1963 he was chairman of the Austrian People’s Party. From April 1961 to February 1964 he was federal chancellor of Austria.
