Gorbachev, Timofei Fedorovich 

Born June 23 (July 6), 1900, in the village of Troitskaia, present-day Riazan’ Oblast; died Dec. 20, 1973, in Novosibirsk. Soviet mining specialist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1958), Hero of Socialist Labor (1948). Member of the CPSU since 1942.

In 1928, Gorbachev graduated from the Tomsk Engineering Institute. From 1929 to 1950 he worked in the Kuz-nets Coal Basin, and since 1950 he has been the director of the Kemerovo Mining Institute (he has been a professor since 1951). Since 1957 he has been the deputy chairman of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Gorbachev’s main works are devoted to systems of exploiting thick, steeply slanting coal layers and systems of exploitation using walking mobile timbering. He participated in the creation and installation of new mine-shaft lamps, for which he received the State Prize of the USSR in 1949. He was awarded two Orders of Lenin, two other orders, and medals.
