Gordii Semenovich Sablukov

Sablukov, Gordii Semenovich 

Born 1804 near Ufa; died Jan. 29 (Feb. 10), 1880, in Kazan. Russian Orientalist and missionary. Son of a priest.

Sablukov graduated from the Orenburg Theological Seminary in 1826 and the Moscow Theological Academy in 1830. From 1830 to 1849 he taught history and Oriental languages at the Saratov Theological Seminary, where from 1843 to 1845 he was N. G. Chernyshevskii’s teacher. From 1849 to 1862, Sablukov was an instructor in Oriental and classical languages and a “learned polemicist against Islam” at the Kazan Theological Academy.

Sablukov wrote numismatic, historical-archaeological, and ethnographic works about the Volga region, the Kipchaks, and the Golden Horde. He also produced the first published Russian translation of the Koran from Arabic in 1878, along with Supplements to the Translation of the Koran (1879; annotated indexes to the Koran) and Information About the Koran (1884), containing an exposition of the Koran and a discussion of its application in daily life and worship.
