Goriaev, Vitalii Nikolaevich 

Born Apr. 1 (14), 1910, in Kurgan. Soviet graphic artist; Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1966). Member of the CPSU since 1951.

Goriaev studied in the Moscow State Higher Institute of Art and Technology and the Moscow Polygraphic Institute from 1929 to 1934 with S. V. Gerasimov, D. S. Moor, and V. A. Favorskii. He specializes in satirical drawings on international themes as well as events of everyday life (printed mainly in the magazines Krokodil, since 1936, and Frontovoi iumor, since 1942), graphic works (the series Americans at Home, fiber-tipped pen and watercolor, 1958, Tret’iakov Gallery), and illustrations (for Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, india ink, printed in 1948, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, india ink and watercolor, published in 1962; and N. V. Gogol’s Petersburg Stories, published in 1965; State Prize of the USSR in 1967). Goriaev’s work is characterized by expressive, generalized drawing bordering on the grotesque. He has been awarded an Order of the Red Star and medals.
