Gorimir Gorimirovich Chernyi

Chernyi, Gorimir Gorimirovich 

Born Jan. 22, 1923, in Kamenets-Podol’skii. Soviet scientist in mechanics. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1962). Member of the CPSU since 1954.

Chernyi served in the Soviet Army from 1941 to 1945. He graduated from Moscow State University in 1949. From 1949 to 1958, he was on the staff of the Central Institute of Aircraft Engine Construction. He became a professor at Moscow State University in 1958 and was made the director of the university’s Research Institute of Mechanics in 1960.

Chernyi’s main works deal with aerodynamics. Chernyi proposed a new method of studying and analyzing gas flows behind strong shock waves, particularly in the case of hypersonic flows past bodies. He has written works on the theory of detonation and combustion, boundary-layer theory, and the theory of gas-fired machines.

Chernyi has received the State Prize of the USSR and has been awarded five orders and various medals.
