Gorinevskii, Valentin Vladislavovich 

Born Sept. 22 (Oct. 4), 1857, in Arkhangel’sk: died Feb. 2. 1937, in Moscow. Soviet pediatrician and hygienist: one of the nation’s first scientists in the fields of physical development, physical education, and medical and pedagogic control; a disciple of P. F. Lesgaft.

Gorinevskii graduated from the medical faculty at the University of Heidelberg in 1887; in 1913 he became a member and professor at the Pedagogical Academy and professor at the Lesgaft Advanced Courses in St. Petersburg. In 1917 he became a professor in the medical department at the University of Samara, where he organized the first university sub-department of physical culture. In 1921 he became head of the research section of the Main Military School of Workers’ Physical Education (Moscow). In 1923 he became a professor at the Second Moscow State University and at the Moscow Institute of Physical Culture, where in the same year he founded the first subdepartment of medical control in the USSR.
