Gorinov, Aleksandr Vasil’evich 

Born July 22 (Aug. 4), 1902, in Lubny, present-day Poltava Oblast. Soviet scientist in the field of rail transportation and general transportation problems. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR since 1939. Member of the CPSU since 1920.

After graduating from the Moscow Institute of Transportation Engineers in 1925, Gorinov served on a number of expeditions to survey routes for new railroad lines (Chardzhou-Kungrad, Ulan-Ude-Naushki, Kungur-Ufa-Orenburg, and Ural’sk-Iletsk). He was the chief engineer in the construction of the Moscow-Donbas railroad line and served as the director of several scientific research institutes. From 1931 to 1946- he taught at the Leningrad Institute of Railroad Engineers (he became a professor in 1931). and from 1932 to 1938 he also taught at the Military Transportation Academy of the Soviet Army. In 1943 he began teaching at the Moscow Institute of Railroad Engineers. In 1965 he became the chairman of the Permanent Commission of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR on Scientific Problems in the Development of Transportation.

Gorinov’s main works are on the theory of integrated planning for railroad systems, the scientific bases of the classification of railroad systems, and the theory of selecting the technical parameters for such systems. He has been awarded six orders, as well as medals.
