Gorlov, Dmitrii Vladimirovich

Born Oct. 20 (Nov. 1), 1899, in St. Petersburg. Soviet sculptor specializing in animal figures and graphic artist.

From 1921 to 1923, Gorlov studied at the Moscow Vkhutemas with V. A. Vatagin and D. S. Moor. Since 1922 he has worked as an illustrator of children’s books and as a designer of toys. In 1944–45 he was chief artist at the ceramics plant in Gzhel’, and since 1958 he has worked at the Dmitrov Porcelain Factory. Gorlov’s figurines closely resemble the molded toys of folk art in their exaggeration of the typical features of an animal and in the ornamental quality of the painted designs, which emphasize the generalized form. His sculpture represents a new way of using the textural and plastic qualities of porcelain. Among his works are eight reliefs for the monument to I. A. Krylov in Kalinin (bronze, 1948–59) and the porcelain sculptures Lynx Cub (1953) and Wolf Cub (1962).
