Gornaia Shoriia 

the southern part of Kemerovo Oblast, RSFSR, inhabited primarily by the Shortsy.

Gornaia Shoriia occupies the spurs of the Salair Ridge, of the Abakan Range, and of the Kuznetskii Alatau Range. Mountains of moderate elevation predominate, covered for the most part by a black taiga of aspen and fir. There are deposits of coal, iron ore, gold, manganese ore, and other minerals. The most important industries are iron-ore mining and logging; coal mining is being developed.

Gornaia Shoriia supplies ore to the metallurgical factories at Novokuznetsk. The Novokuznetsk-Tashtagol and the Novokuznetsk-Abakan railway lines pass through the region. The population is concentrated in the river valleys (the Kondoma, the Mras-Su) and along the railway lines. The major population centers are Mezhdurechensk, Tashtagol, Temirtau, and Mundybash.
