Gorozhankin, Ivan Nikolaevich

Born Aug. 16 (28), 1848, in Voronezh; died Nov. 7 (20), 1904, in Moscow. Russian botanist.

Gorozhankin graduated from the University of Moscow in 1871 and then served there as a lecturer beginning in 1875 and as professor from 1881. He established the school of comparative embryology in Russian botany. Gorozhankin studied the structure of archegonia in Gymnospermae and was the first to observe and describe the fertilization process in them. He introduced the concept of archegonial plants, including Bryophyta, Pteridophyta, and Gymnospermae. Using the green algae Chlamydomonadaceae he followed the evolutionary process of sexual multiplication from isogamy through heterogamy to oogamy. Gorozhankin established the morphological school of botanists in Moscow.
