Gorrie, John (1803–55) physician, inventor; born in Charleston, S.C. He graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City (1833) and took up residence in Apalachiola, Fla. Around 1840, he conceived the idea of cooling the air in sick rooms and hospitals; in 1851 he received the first patent for mechanical refrigeration in the U.S.A. Unable to raise money to manufacture his new machinery, he suffered a nervous collapse and was unable to resume his work. Florida placed his statue in the U.S. Capitol.
