Giessen (gē`sən), city (1994 pop. 73,705), Hesse, central Germany, on the Lahn River. It is an industrial center and rail junction. Its manufactures include machinery, textiles, rubber goods, and tobacco products. Iron ore is mined nearby. Giessen was chartered by 1248 and became the chief town of Upper Hesse Hesse , Ger. Hessen, state (1994 pop. 5,800,000), 8,150 sq mi (24,604 sq km), central Germany. Wiesbaden is the capital. Giessen 

a city in the Federal Republic of Germany, in the Land (state) of Hesse. Located in the valley of the Lahn River in the Rhenish Slate Mountains. Population, 74,400 (1969). It is an industrial center in the Lahn-Dill iron-ore basin. Metalworking, metallurgy, printing, and the rubber industry are significantly developed. The J. Liebig University, which was founded in 1607, is located there. Giessen has been known as a city since 1248.
