Gossard, Arthur C. (Charles) (1935– ) physicist; born in Ottawa, Ill. He was a member of American Telephone & Telegraph Co. Bell Laboratories (1960–87) before joining the University of California: Santa Barbara (1987). He made major contributions to solid state physics, ferromagnetism, and studies of quantum structures and crystal lattices.
