Govorov, Vladimir Leonidovich 

Born Oct. 18, 1924, in Odessa. Soviet military leader. General of the army (1977). Member of the CPSU since 1946. Son of L. A. Govorov.

V. L. Govorov joined the Soviet Army in 1942. He graduated from the M. V. Frunze Military Academy in 1949 and the Military Academy of the General Staff in 1963. During the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45, Govorov commanded a platoon and a battery on the Leningrad and Second Baltic fronts.

After the war, Govorov served in command positions. He was named first deputy commander in chief of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany in May 1969, commander of the Baltic Military District in June 1971, and commander of the Moscow Military District in July 1972. Govorov became a candidate member of the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1976. He was a deputy to the eighth and ninth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.

Govorov has been awarded two Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of the Patriotic War Second Class, the Order for Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR Third Class, and various medals. Govorov has also been awarded foreign orders and medals.
