Govyrin, Vladimir Aleksandrovich 

Born Feb. 22, 1924, in Balashov, Saratov Oblast. Soviet physiologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976). Member of the CPSU since 1945.

In 1946, Govyrin graduated from the Military Veterinary Academy of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army in Moscow. In 1956 he began working at the I. M. Sechenov Institute of Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, where he was appointed laboratory head in 1963 and director in 1975.

Govyrin has devoted his research mainly to the physiology of the vegetative nervous system. He has studied the laws governing the development of the sympathetic innervation of the cardiovascular system in vertebrates and has proposed the concept of universal participation by vascular nerves in the humoral transmission of sympathetic effects on tissues.

Govyrin has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and several medals.
