Famous for its wines, the city also produces textiles, metals, and foodstuffs. Founded in the 13th cent., Zielona Góra became a prominent town on the trade route from Berlin to Upper Silesia. The city retains a 13th-century church and a 14th-century town hall.

Major industries include machine building (diesel locomotives, railroad cars, electrical equipment, textile machinery, and steel structural components), the manufacture of wool cloth and furniture, and food-processing. An engineering institute was established here in 1965. Zielona Góra was founded in the 13th century.
