On central western border of NH; original county, organized Apr 29, 1769. Name Origin: For Augustus Henry Fitzroy (1735-1811), 3rd Duke of Grafton, an English parliamentarian who supported American colonial interests.

Area (sq mi): 1750.08 (land 1713.33; water 36.75). Pop per sq mi: 49.40.
Pop 2005: 84,708. State rank: 5. Pop change: 2000-20005 3.60%; 1990-2000 9.10%. Pop 2000: 81,743 (White 95.10%; Black or African American 0.50%; Hispanic or Latino 1.10%; Asian 1.70%; Other 2.00%). Foreign born: 3.90%. Median age: 37.00.
