In northeastern TN, northeast of Knoxville; organized Apr 22, 1796 from Hawkins County. Name Origin: For Mary Grainger Blount, wife of William Blount (1749-1800), governor (1790-95) of the territory south of the Ohio River, present-day TN.

Area (sq mi): 302.44 (land 280.33; water 22.11). Pop per sq mi: 79.50.
Pop 2005: 22,283. State rank: 60. Pop change: 2000-20005 7.90%; 1990-2000 20.80%. Pop 2000: 20,659 (White 97.70%; Black or African American 0.30%; Hispanic or Latino 1.10%; Asian 0.10%; Other 1.20%). Foreign born: 1.10%. Median age: 37.70.
Income 2000: per capita $14,505; median household $27,997; Pop below poverty level: 18.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $18,947-$19,897.
