On the northwest coast of MI on Grand Traverse Bay; organized as Omeena County Apr 1, 1840; name changed Apr 17, 1851. Name Origin: From French Le Grand Traverse 'the long crossing,' for the trail across the foot of Traverse Bay.

Area (sq mi): 601.13 (land 465.07; water 136.06). Pop per sq mi: 180.60.
Pop 2005: 83,971. State rank: 24. Pop change: 2000-20005 8.10%; 1990-2000 20.80%. Pop 2000: 77,654 (White 95.60%; Black or African American 0.40%; Hispanic or Latino 1.50%; Asian 0.50%; Other 2.50%). Foreign born: 2.10%. Median age: 37.70.
Income 2000: per capita $22,111; median household $43,169; Pop below poverty level: 5.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $28,912-$29,662.
