In west-central MT, northwest of Butte; organized Mar 2, 1893 from Deer Lodge County. Name Origin: For the Granite Mountain Silver Mine, itself named for the granite rock within the mine.

Area (sq mi): 1733.11 (land 1727.44; water 5.67). Pop per sq mi: 1.70.
Pop 2005: 2,965. State rank: 41. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.80%; 1990-2000 11.10%. Pop 2000: 2,830 (White 95.30%; Black or African American 0.00%; Hispanic or Latino 1.30%; Asian 0.10%; Other 3.60%). Foreign born: 1.00%. Median age: 42.80.
Income 2000: per capita $16,636; median household $27,813; Pop below poverty level: 16.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $19,317-$22,194.
Unemployment 2004: 5.20%. Change from 2000: -2.50%. Median travel time to work: 26.40 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 26.30%.
