Size: 1,795 acres.
Established: Established on February 21, 1899; transferred from War Department on August 10, 1933.
Location: In the northeastern portion of Vicksburg, Mississippi, with three detached units south of the city along Washington St. near the Mississippi River bridges and one unit in Madison Parish, Louisiana. Park entrance is on US 80 (Clay St.), just off I-20.
Facilities: Picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor center (including small museum with full-size dioramas), sellf-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities: Hiking, bicycling, auto touring.
Special Features: Reconstructed forts and trenches evoke memories of the 47-day siege that ended in the surrender of the city on July 4, 1863. Victory gave the North control of the Mississippi River and cut the Confederacy in two. Today, the battlefield at Vicksburg is in an excellent state of preservation. It includes 1,330 historic monuments and markers, 20 miles of reconstructed trenches and earthworks, a 16-mile tour road, antebellum home, 144 emplaced cannons, restored Union gunboat @it1USS Cairo@it2, and the Vicksburg National Cemetery.
