On the central northern border of NC, north of Raleigh; organized Jun 28, 1746 (prior to statehood) from Edgecombe County. Name Origin: For John Carteret (1690-1763), Earl Granville, a lord proprietor who owned the district in which the new county was located.

Area (sq mi): 536.56 (land 531.12; water 5.45). Pop per sq mi: 101.10.
Pop 2005: 53,674. State rank: 50. Pop change: 2000-20005 10.70%; 1990-2000 26.50%. Pop 2000: 48,498 (White 59.30%; Black or African American 34.90%; Hispanic or Latino 4.00%; Asian 0.40%; Other 4.00%). Foreign born: 4.00%. Median age: 36.20.
Income 2000: per capita $17,118; median household $39,965; Pop below poverty level: 11.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,352-$21,433.
Unemployment 2004: 6.80%. Change from 2000: 0.80%. Median travel time to work: 27.40 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 46.50%.
