Gray, Harold

Gray, Harold (Lincoln) (1894–1968) cartoonist; born in Kankakee, Ill. After serving as an assistant on Sidney Smith's newspaper comic strip, The Gumps, from 1921 to 1924, he created his own strip in 1924, Little Orphan Annie. For the next 45 years, he worked ceaselessly on his widely syndicated strip. Little Orphan Annie was adapted to a hit Broadway musical Annie (1977), and a film based on the musical was released in 1982.
