In southwestern KS, west of Dodge City; organized Mar 5, 1887 from Finney and Ford counties. Name Origin: For Alfred Gray, teacher, lawyer, and secretary of the KS Board of Agriculture (1873-80).

Pop 2005: 5,861. State rank: 64. Pop change: 2000-20005 -0.70%; 1990-2000 9.40%. Pop 2000: 5,904 (White 88.60%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 9.80%; Asian 0.10%; Other 7.50%). Foreign born: 9.50%. Median age: 33.00.

In northeastern TX panhandle, east of Amarillo; organized Aug 21, 1876 from Bexar County. Name Origin: For Capt. Peter W. Gray (1819-74), an officer in the TX army, TX legislator and justice of the TX supreme court (1874).
