On the west-central coast of WA, E of Olympia; organized as Chehalis County Apr 14, 1854 (prior to statehood); name changed Mar 15, 1915. Name Origin: For Robert Gray (1755-1806), an American who discovered Grays Harbor and named it Bulfinch for an owner of his ship. Formerly called Puerto Grek by Spanish explorer Martinez y Zayas and Whidbey or Whitbey Harbor by British explorer David Douglas.

Area (sq mi): 2224.44 (land 1916.89; water 307.55). Pop per sq mi: 37.00.
Pop 2005: 70,900. State rank: 16. Pop change: 2000-20005 5.50%; 1990-2000 4.70%. Pop 2000: 67,194 (White 86.50%; Black or African American 0.30%; Hispanic or Latino 4.80%; Asian 1.20%; Other 10.20%). Foreign born: 4.20%. Median age: 38.80.
Income 2000: per capita $16,799; median household $34,160; Pop below poverty level: 16.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,953-$23,467.
Unemployment 2004: 8.30%. Change from 2000: -2.30%. Median travel time to work: 22.40 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 12.60%.
